15 sites not to be missed in Fez

1 - Bab Boujloud


Better known as the "blue door", the construction of Bab Boujloud is relatively recent, 1913. This door is an architectural marvel. It is the main access to the medina.

 

2 - Borj north

 


More recent than the one in the south, the North Borj now houses a weapons museum that brings together all the collections of edged weapons and firearms dating from prehistory to the present day. This Borj also offers a breathtaking view of the old town.

3 - Borj South


The South Borj a fortress built during the reign of the Saadian Sultan Ahmed El Mansour Dehbi (1578-1609). President Giscard d'Estaing served there during his military service. The southern Borj offers a breathtaking panorama of Fez El Bali.

4 - Dar Batha


Dar Batha is an old house built in 1894-1909 by Sultan Moulay El Hassan and nowadays transformed into a museum of arts and traditions of Fez and its region.
 

5 - Dar El Magana


It is a hydraulic clock with balls dating from 1357, located on Talaa Sghira, in a decor of carved wood and plaster.


6 - The tanners - Debbaghine district


Not far from the Seffarine square, the smells guide to the district of dyers and tanneries where the craftsmen proceed to this so particular work.


7 - Souk El Attarine


In the souk El Attarine, all spices are offered to you. In a mixture of bright colors and appetizing smells, they recall the strong culinary tradition of the city whose roots go back to Arab-Andalusian origins dating back to the thirteenth century. It is also where you will find natural cosmetic products.


8 - Souk El Henna


It is a small isolated square planted with trees where you can find all kinds of natural beauty products including henna. This small square is better known as the henna souk.
 

9 - Fez El Jedid


The palatial complex was located north of the city and built by the Merinids in the thirteenth century to serve as a residence for the princes of this dynasty. Fés El Jedid includes the royal palace which covers more than seventy hectares.


10 - The mosque EL Karaouiyine (Quarouiyne)


Founded in 862 by a Muslim woman Fatima El Fihria from Quairouan. It is the oldest university in the Islamic Arab world and the world (before Oxford and the Sorbonne). Fourteen doors provide access to the interior of the university which has a valuable library with 30,000 volumes.


11 - Medersa Attarine


The Medersa Attarine was built during the reign of Merinid Sultan Abu Said Othman between 1323 and 1325. Its main function was to accommodate the students of the University of Karaouiyne. The Medersa Attarine is a jewel of Merinid architectural art.


12 - Médersa Bou Inania


The medersa Bou Inania is an ancient Islamic university built between 1350 and 1357 by the Merinide Sultan Abu Inane and whose architecture is one of the masterpieces of Moorish art.
 

13 - Medina Fez El Bali


It is the largest in Morocco and the most exciting. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1976. Its labyrinthine alleys lead to a multitude of historical wonders and souks.


14 - Place Nejjarine


This small Nejjarine square takes its name from the cabinetmakers who occupy the shops in the neighborhood. A pretty fountain all of the zeliges decorated and a carved wooden pediment comes to decorate the place. In this square is a former foundouk (guest house), now converted into a museum that displays marvels that trace the history of wood in Morocco.


15 - Place Seffarine


One of the most authentic squares of Fez composed mainly of dinner stalls. It hammers, it shines, it haggles. It is right next to the Qaraouiyine library.
