The Kasbah of Boulaouane is a fortress built around the year 1710 by Moulay Ismaïl, the Sultan of Morocco. Even though the buildings have been largely destroyed, there are still interesting ruins and still the same magnificent view over the valley of the wadi Oum er Rbia. Rent a car to go to Boulaouane and discover its history and Kasbah.
On the banks of the river Oum er Rbia, at the top of a rocky hill, stand the imposing ramparts of the Kasbah of Boulaouane. By having this building built in this strategic place, with a breathtaking view of the river and its surroundings, Sultan Moulay Ismaïl wanted his presence to stabilize the region.
Today, the imposing ramparts of the Kasbah still reflect this desire to impress anyone who could see them from afar. Unfortunately, the interior has been largely destroyed and only a few empty rooms remain of the sultan's house and the mosque just the minaret. Nevertheless, the mosaics of the inner courtyard remain, as well as the entrance gate and the ramparts, which are extremely well preserved. It is by going around them that you will make the most of this visit and the magnificent panoramic view.
The Kasbah of Boulaouane has located 80km from El Jadida (1h30 drive) and 130km from Casablanca (about 2h30 by car). It is, therefore, preferable to rent a car to be able to freely enjoy the Boulaouane region and visit its Kasbah.
Tip: rent a comfortable car to discover the Boulaouane region where you can visit the historical Boulaouane Kasbah.
